Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a spoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the blow of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
That's So Cringe, It's Hilarious (In a Way)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer magnitude of chaos and just gives up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping defense.
But then, you realize that it's not really funny. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a sigh.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You question about the meaning of it all. Was this intended to be here funny?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?

Awful Day Ever
It all started with the case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't make it to look presentable. As I was running out the door, I stumbled and gracefully all over myself. To make matters worse, I was completely behind schedule for work.
I flustered. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was a complete disaster.
The rest of the day was an absolute nightmare. seemed to conspire against me. I get anything done.
By the time I reached my destination, I was completely drained. This day, this horrific day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
